GUE/NGL MEPs will later today question members of the ECB-Commission-IMF Troika about their recent mission to Greece and the impact of austerity in the country. "Today in Greece, the Troika is the real government. The results of their policies as implemented by the PASOK and New Democracy administration is mass unemployment, destitution, homelessness and an economy contracting at the rate of 7% per quarter" said Greek MEP Nikolaos Chountis speaking ahead of the meeting. "Today the representatives of the Troika will argue that their pan-European austerity recipe will save Greece, Portugal and Ireland from bankruptcy". He said that the European peoples would reverse the neoliberal policies of the Troika and called on Greek people to show the Troika the door. "We urge them to reject political parties that obey the Troika, strengthen the Left, and create the conditions for a process of recovery and democracy in Greece and Europe." German MEP Jürgen Klute said that today's meeting should be followed by much more openness to discussions with stakeholders and citizens. "The Troika must have an honest assessment of the social and economic effects of the adoption of their austerity recipes. If they continue to cut wages, fire people, and destroy the economic base, their presence in Greece, Ireland and Portugal will never be accepted."
